Privacy Policy

Last Updated: September 1, 2023

WYD offers a way to share what you’re doing with your friends and family. You have a status and can update it as often as you’d like. You can share statuses with your friends and  geotag your status to places on WYD’s map.

Location data

If you choose to allow location tracking when you sign up to geotag your status to a place on the map, you will share your location with us and with other users when the app is open or in the background, depending on your preferences. You can choose to opt out of this sharing, but the functionality of the app will be limited if you do so. Below, we provide more information about the location data we collect and how you can opt out if you no longer wish to share your location data with us.

Our privacy principles

When you use WYD, you’re trusting us with your information. We understand it’s a tremendous responsibility and work hard to protect your information and put you in control. We wrote this Privacy Policy to help you understand what personal information we collect via our website and mobile app, how we use it and disclose it, how long we retain it, and what choices you have about it.

  • WYD users control how much information they share. You control how much information you share with other users on the app, and you can turn off your location if you do not want to be visible on WYD’s map.
  • WYD honors users’ privacy rights. We will delete and provide you with access to your personal information if you ask us to, including when you close your account.
  • WYD does not sell users’ personal information. We are not in the business of selling users’ personal information. We may advertise nearby products and services you may be interested in, but we will not share any personal information with third-parties to use for their own purposes.
  • We store the personal information we collect for as short a duration as possible. Where possible, we lower the resolution of historical location data, and store only de-identified or aggregate data that is not tied to you.

Personal information we collect

Personal information you provide to us:

  • Account information, that you provide when you download the app and sign up to use it, such as your name, phone number, and the social media accounts you sync with your WYD account.
  • Profile information, such as your username, hometown, profile picture and profile background.
  • User contacts, that you may choose to share with us to help us let you know when your contacts have joined the app and easily let you create chats with them. Please note that this also means that if other users have you in their contact book, we will let them know when you have joined the app.
  • Messages that you exchange with other users through the app via direct message or communications in a group or community. We may review the contents of these messages if a user reports, or we otherwise detect, a potential trust and safety violation or potentially illegal or illicit activity.
  • Geolocation information, that you provide for us to share your location with other app users and to allow us to display advertisements from businesses located around you.
  • Feedback or correspondence, such as information you provide when you contact us with questions, feedback, product reviews, or otherwise correspond with us online.
  • Usage information, such as information about how you use the app and interact with us, including information associated with any content you upload to the app or otherwise submit to us, and information you provide when you use any interactive features of the app.
  • Marketing information, such as your preferences for receiving communications about our activities and publications, and details about how you engage with our communications.

Information we obtain from third parties:

  • Third-party login information. When you link, connect, or login to the Services with a third party service (e.g. Google or Apple), you direct the service to send us information such as your registration, friends list, and profile information as controlled by that service or as authorized by you via your privacy settings at that service.

Automatic data collection. We and our service providers may automatically log information about you, your device, and your interaction over time with our app, our communications and other online services, such as:

  • Device data, such as your device’s operating system type and version, manufacturer and model, screen resolution, RAM and disk size, CPU usage, device type (e.g., phone, tablet), IP address, unique identifiers (including identifiers used for advertising purposes), language settings, mobile device carrier, and radio/network information (e.g., WiFi, LTE, 4G).
  • Online activity data, such as pages or screens you viewed, how long you spent on a page or screen, browsing history, navigation paths between pages or screens, information about your activity on a page or screen, access times, and duration of access, and whether you have opened our marketing emails or clicked links within them.

We use the following tools for automatic data collection:

  • Local storage technologies, like HTML5, that provide cookie-equivalent functionality but can store larger amounts of data, including on your device outside of your browser in connection with specific applications.
  • Web beacons, also known as pixel tags or clear GIFs, which are used to demonstrate that a webpage or email was accessed or opened, or that certain content was viewed or clicked.

You can contact us as set out in the “Contact us” section below to find out more about these safeguards.

Retention of personal information

We retain your personal information only for as long as is necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected and processed, in accordance with our retention policies, and in accordance with applicable laws or until you withdraw your consent (where applicable).

To determine the appropriate retention period for your personal information, we consider the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the personal information, the potential risk of harm from unauthorized use or disclosure of your personal information, the purposes for which we use your personal information and whether we can achieve those purposes through other means, and the applicable legal requirements.

We use reasonable organizational, technical and administrative measures designed to protect against unauthorized access, misuse, loss, disclosure, alteration and destruction of personal information. Unfortunately, data transmission over the Internet cannot be guaranteed as completely secure. Therefore, while we strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of personal information.
